Person county is
a 400 square mile area in the rolling north central section of North Carolina.
This lovely Piedmont area, north of the hustling Triangle Park area of Raleigh,
Durham, and Chapel Hill, is another way of life. Rural, warm and welcoming, Person County's forests and farms offer lush beauty and
gentle family entertainment. Person County boasts two small mountains, Mt. Tirzah and Hagar's Mountain, and lakes, Mayo Lake and Hyco Lake, for your
camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, water sports, swimming, walking and
tennis pleasures. Proximity to major ski and beach resorts, as well as the night
life in the nearby Raleigh-Durham area, rounds out the entertainment
picture.
Person County Arts Council boasts "We
bring you the Arts in Person" The Kirby, a beautifully restored historic
movie house, offers live theatre, dance, and top-name concerts. |

Pointe is a modern entertainment center, with a diner, 8 movie screens,
stadium seating, video game room, bowling lanes, roller skating rink, pub with
pool tables, and private party or meeting rooms.
If you crave more
excitement, Roxboro Motor Sports Dragway
is open from March through December.
There is history here. Formed in
1791, and named for General Thomas Person, a Revolutionary Patriot and a trustee
of the University of North Carolina, Person County is bounded by Granville,
Durham, Orange and Caswell counties, as well as the State of Virginia.
The lovely Roxboro (est.1793) is the county seat and claims "It's Better
in Person". Revolutionary War General Stephen Moore was one of the first
settlers. Called Mt. Tirzah (Mount Beautiful), his home was built in 1793. It is
still there and is owned by one of his descendants.
Person County was a
model of the plantation agriculture before the Civil War. Reconstruction left
mainly small farms and the economy did not rebound easily. Today, Person
County's population of 36,610 (2002) enjoys a balance of industry and
agriculture.
J.A. Long brought the Norfolk and Western Railroad Companies
into Roxboro, and established the Peoples Bank (1891), and the Roxboro Cotton
Mill (1899). His son, J.A. Long, Jr., spurred the city to attract new businesses
to Roxboro. One of these businesses, the Baker Company (1923), is now the
nationally known Collins and Aikman.<<
